TWENTY-FIVE University of Technology communications for development undergraduates visited The National’s news office and printing plant in Lae on Monday.
The visit was part of their study excursion on news gathering and the printing of newspapers.
After a briefing on news desk operations and news gathering, the students toured the editorial/newsroom and then the printing plant.
At the briefing and tour, the students asked questions on the role of journalists, the type of news each journalist worked on daily, the challenges they faced in the course of their duty to gather information and news and the process in getting the news across to the public.
Reporters Jimmy Kalebe, Eribiri Zurenuoc and Bradley Mariori gave the visitors more insight into their roles at The National.
At the printing plant, the students were briefed on the printing of newspapers, the colours used and the quantity of newsprint.
Student leader Gethrude Japi said the tour of the editorial room and the printing plant was a great help to their research and the field of communications.
“I had to see first-hand the processes and how the news get printed on the paper and sold and reach readers,” she said.
“It was such an in-depth study tour. We are looking forward to be part of your team one day.”
