Normal, Sports

THE second biennial PNG University Games will be held at the University of Natural Resources & Environment, Vudal campus, in 2012 after a decision was reached by the PNG University Sports Association at its executive board meeting at the University of Goroka, recently.
However, the dates for the games will be decided by the hosts according to its academic calendar together with the association’s sports calendar.
Formerly known as the PNG University Games, it is now the National Union of Students Games. It is also an affiliate of the PNG Sports Federation is now the governing body.
PNGUSA president Molly Perry-Geno said the association would be working with the UNRE to look into the availability of sporting facilities to cater for the games.
She said if there was a need for the upgrading of the facilities, the association would be seeking funding.
There was an absence of the spirit of sportsmanship during the last games at the University of Technology in Lae and the association was looking forward to reviving the spirit of the games in 2012.
Student leaders had also resorted to unethical ways of resolving problems.
The association would not tolerate any unruly sports behaviour.
The games were a way of encouraging unity and excellence through sports.
Perry-Geno, who is also the Unitech sports executive officer, acknowledged sponsors Digicel, PNGFM, PNG National Gaming Control Board, Coca-Cola Amatil, Nestle, SVS and Jomba Trading, including Sports Minister Philemon Embel for officiating at the games.
She also said that the 26th World University Summer Games would be held at Shenzhen, China, next Aug 12-23.
Six universities will be accorded on merit for their athletes to participate at the event on gender participation in golf, tennis and athletics.
A 15-member team will travel for the event
Universities will be responsible for their athletes’ passports, visas, levy fees, airfares, travel expenses while PNGUSA will help with travel arrangements.
