Upgrade of Vivigani airstrip

Letters

IN a bid to boost development and security in Milne Bay, a proposal has been put forth to upgrade the historic Vivigani Airport and establish a Papua New Guinea Defence Force (PNGDF) Air Squadron base at this strategic location on Goodenough Island.
Vivigani, with its historical significance as a World War II base for Australian soldiers, presents a great opportunity for revitalisation. However, the current state of the airport runway, which has fallen into disrepair due to lack of maintenance by the District Development Authority of Kiriwina-Goodenough, underscores the urgent need for action.
The potential benefits of upgrading Vivigani Airport and establishing a PNG DF Air Squadron base are manifold.
Not only would this project enhance national security by strategically positioning military assets in the region, but it would also stimulate economic growth and provide critical infrastructure for the people of Goodenough Island and the wider Milne Bay.
The proposed project aims to leverage the existing land mass and landscape of Vivigani to develop a modern and efficient airstrip capable of supporting military operations.
This initiative would not only benefit the Defence Force but also enable easier access for civilian aircraft, facilitating trade, tourism, and healthcare services to remote communities in the area.
I appeal to the Kiriwina-Goodenough MP Douglas Tomuriesa and the esteemed members of our provincial and national Governments to consider this proposal seriously.
By investing in Vivigani Airport and establishing a PNGDF Air Squadron base, we have the opportunity to bring tangible and sustainable development to rural communities like Vivigani and uplift the livelihoods of our fellow citizens in Milne Bay.
This proposal aligns with our collective vision for progress and prosperity in Papua New Guinea.
I urge the relevant authorities to engage in constructive dialogue and deliberations within the Parliament to advance this initiative for the greater good of our nation.
Let us seize this opportunity to transform Vivigani into a beacon of development and security, setting an example for rural empowerment and national advancement.
Together, let’s build a stronger, safer, and more prosperous future for all Papua New Guineans.
