WITH the urging of schools in the National Capital District to comply with betel nut ban, the University of Papua New Guinea has taken a stand to do so for this academic year.

During the UPNG’s new intakes orientation programme last week, students were told that betel nut chewing would not be tolerated in the university premises and students who were caught in the act would be disciplined.

That was stated by UPNG registrar Jeniffer Popat when delivering her speech to the new intakes.

Popat told students the rules and regulations they should abide by while studying at the institution.

She said they should be mindful that the National Capital District Commission had banned betel nut chewing and that those caught in the act inside and outside the university would be punished.

“It’s a public university and students would be dealt with for breaching that law,” Popat said.

She said the university had witnessed unwanted behaviour that was practised by first-year students and continuing students over the years through consumption of alcohol and urged students to stop that.

She said rules and regulations of the university must be kept and high level of professionalism must be cultivated while studying there.

She urged students to change their style of dressing of wearing cut jeans as it was a common practice by university students these days.

Popat stressed that for them to be recognised as a university student they must dress appropriately and neatly.
