UPNG to reinstate SRC

THE Student Representative Council (SRC) at the University of PNG will be reinstated, chancellor Robert Igara says.
Igara made that known during the announcement of a new vice-chancellor of the university in Port Moresby yesterday.
“Regarding the SRC, the interim council has already made a decision to reinstate the SRC so it will be reinstated to continue function as the students’ voice,” Igara said.
The SRC was suspended by the former university council under the leadership of former acting chancellor Dr Nicholas Mann following a students’ protest and unrest in 2016.
Igara said the new university management under the governance of the interim council and the new vice-chancellor, Prof Frank Griffin, would allow the SRC to be reinstated.
He said the interim council was appointed for a period of 12 months to address various allegations levelled against the university and the appointment of a new vice-chancellor was part of the recommendations the new council was implementing.
“We are looking into all the issues of allegations and mismanagement and harassments that are levelled against the institution,” Igara said.
“The interim council is confident to look into all these issues and address them within the given time frame and furnish a report to the university and the government.”
