PAPUA New Guinea’s efforts to address the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has received a boost in funding support, thanks to the United States government.
The US government, through the US Agency for International Development (USAID), announced US$5 million (about K17.8 million) in support of the PNG Government’s ongoing Covid-19 response.
Announced by USAID’s visiting deputy mission director for the Pacific Islands and Mongolia, Betty Chung, the support includes US$1 million (about K3.5 million) in technical assistance to support the Health Department and key development partners to implement planned activities under the Global Fund’s Covid-19 response mechanism.
US$4 million (about K14 million) will be used to install comprehensive liquid medical oxygen systems at the Port Moresby General Hospital and Angau General Hospital in Lae.
Chung said: “USAID is proud to partner with the Government and other key stakeholders to strengthen the country’s health system and mitigate the impacts of the Covid-19.
“I’d like to acknowledge our goodwill and partnership with the (Health Department), National Control Centre and the Covid-19 vaccine ministerial task force.
“The milestones we have achieved to date would not have been possible without your strong commitment and enduring partnership.”
