Vaccination team facing awareness challenges

AWARENESS conducted on the Covid-19 vaccination is a challenge because many people have already been fed misinformation on its importance and effectiveness, an official says.
Alphonse Raiava, the National Capital District Health Authority advocacy and social mobalisation team leader for Moresby South, said the good news was that some people were responding albeit slowly.
Five members of his team are based in the urban clinics while eight are visiting communities.
They have also conducted trainings for influential people in the communities such as pastors.
They are also visiting primary and secondary schools.
“We have seen (some coming forward to) receive the vaccine,” he said. “It is really tough talking to (people) in settlements.
“There are lots of ifs and buts.
“Sometimes we are afraid of staying there for too long.”
Raiava said misinformation shared on social media had made people scared.
“People want to get vaccinated (and) have asked if a mobile team (can come to their) community.
“Rita Flynn for many is too far.”
Raiava who received the first dose of AstraZeneca in May is looking forward to receiving the second on Friday.
“The Covid-19 vaccine is very important because our health is important and with good health we can go to work and do everything else,” he said.
