DEBUTANT Boe Vagi bagged a double to help Hanuabada Hawks beat Butterflies 14-4 for their second Under-20 victory of the Port Moresby Rugby Football League season on Sunday.
The match started slowly as both teams struggled to gain momentum in week four of the first round.
Arua Moide-coached Hawks wasted no time in opening the scoring when winger Vagi Joshua dived over in the corner for an unconverted try.
Butterflies replied through winger Jeremie Kunda to level the score at 4-4 before halftime.
After the break, both teams looked to create more scoring opportunities, but a couple of tackles saw two Butterflies players sin-binned. Despite being two players short, Butterflies managed to defend Hawks’ quick attack. But 10 minutes from fulltime, Hawks rejigged their game plan through pivots Leke Kohu and Boko Gari who set up Vagi for another Hanuabada try.
Vagi dashed any hopes of a fightback when he intercepted the ball and ran 50m to score under the uprights moments from fulltime.
Moide said he was impressed with the performance of the two-try hero.
“Everyone did well, but Vagi was the standout player in the match,” he said.
“To score two tries and be named as the man of the match is a special moment for him.
He is a young player.”
“If he continues this form, I’m sure other clubs will be interested in him as the league has always been a supplier of players to Digicel Cup franchises.” The Hawks will be looking to go back in title contention this season.
