WEST Sepik’s Vanimo Soccer Association has elected new office bearers as part of compliance to become an associate member of the Papua New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA).
PNGFA member association service manager Stanley Khanna and senior PNGFA vice-president, Mamose, Sigifred Beschel attended the elections.
“Vanimo will become the first association to join the football family as an associate member if they meet all the PNGFA requirements,” the sport’s national governing body said in a statement.
The other eight members are Wewak, Alotau, Kerema, Milne Bay, East New Britain, Kavieng and Popondetta.
“Wewak Soccer Association was the first for PNGFA to visit to help restore them under the governing body, however, they had yet to sort out their differences,” it said.
Beschel explained the eligibility process of the election before the vote was taken. He said clubs that competed the Vanimo Urban Soccer Association’s 2019 season were qualified to participate.
Beschel said others that had just joined the association after the interim committee’s formation would be abstained from taking part.
Out of the 16 clubs present, only 10 clubs were eligible to participate.
The new Vanimo Soccer Association executives are Willie Labong (president), Jacinta Dagen (vice-president), Clement Leop (treasurer), ordinary member Dickson Muliale and Women representative Freda Yaka. Khanna said he was pleased with members of the Vanimo Soccer Association for organising themselves to comply with the PNGFA requirements.
PNGFA president John Kapi Natto welcomed Vanimo back into the football fraternity, saying this was the first step in becoming a full member.
Kapi Natto said it was about developing football across the country.
“PNGFA would like to see one provincial football association per province except for Lae, Port Moresby and Kimbe which have two associations that was done under previous PNGFA regime,” the statement said.
“It is part of Kapi Natto’s vision is to see one association per centre as PNGFA drives the message of football throughout the country.”
