FISHERMEN in Vanimo, West Sepik, can now store their daily catch, thanks to the National Fisheries Authority and Japan’s Overseas Fishery Corporation Foundation.

The organisations have co-funded the Vanimo Fish Market and facilities valued at K800,000 to be used to store fresh fish.

The facility, built in the heart of Vanimo town, would assist local fishermen to store fish and other marine catch until they were sold to respective buyers.

The facility consists of freezers and an ice maker.

Speaking during the official opening of the facility yesterday, acting Governor Paul Negai said the province was losing its fish market because it was not looking after its marine resources.

NFA sedentary manageress Luanah Yaman said NFA’s vision to make Papua New Guinea a tuna processing destination was slowly being realised by improving the organisation’s competitive edge in terms of providing basic facilities, sufficient labour supplies, high quality support facilities and services.

“This exciting initiative is a result of continued collaboration between NFA, our development partners and the provincial government in designing projects.
