ABOUT 1,000 outstanding cases involving next of kin, accurate reissuance of estates of state land, houses and plantations remain unattended since pre-independence in Northern, according to an official.
Office of Public Trustee of Papua New Guinea (formerly Public Curator’s Office) Northern officer David Nohoro said this after a Toyata Land Cruiser worth K205,000 was donated to the institution by Northern Governor Gary Juffa.
“We are an instrumental institution that has been overlooked by successive governments,” he said. “If you study a lot of our law and order and ethnic clashes, most are related to wrongful ownership of estates, especially land.
“I am humbled that the governor has finally recognised our struggle.
“This vehicle accelerates our efforts to adequately attend to pressing extension work in the field.
“The governor is keen to have matters of Land Settlement Scheme (LLS) resolved with his support of the Office of Public Trustee of PNG here in Northern.”
Nohoro said the office function was decentralised in 2014 and Northern administration had taken full operation of the functions.
However, to date, it has been operating on a recurrent sum of K10,000 annually.
He said Juffa had indicated to provide further funding through his office next year.
“A submission of K50,000 was now before Juffa’s provincial executive council for consideration for the 2024 operational year to intensify their efforts as a province, especially Afore, Tufi, Kokoda and Ioma,” Nohoro said.
