Vendors experiencing bad business due to bad weather

Vendors in markets around Port Moresby are facing difficulties due to rainy weather, a seller said yesterday.
“The wet weather has slowed down business for those of us who sell our goods on the ground” said Loti Wakri, a potato vendor at Boroko Market.
Wakri said vendors who sold their goods on the ground were experiencing bad business because of the ongoing wet weather.
“We can’t sell when heavy rain create pools on the ground,” she said.
“Our market food turns bad.”
Wakri said buying the food in wholesale at Gordon Market was another thing.
They also have to pay young men who bring bags of sand to fill up muddy pools so they can do their marketing.
“They young men charge us K5 for a 10kg bag of sand,” Wakri said
Maria George, a vendor at Waigani Market, said that they do not get many customers during rainy weather and end up bringing most their goods back home.
Aee Reno, a vendor at Kipo Market, said the strong winds blew away and damaged their market umbrellas.
“It’s another expense to get our umbrella’s fixed or to buy a new one” she said.
NCDC markets operations supervisor David Uki urged market vendors to be patient because plans were in place to help them.
“There are plans to address this issues but all this takes time,” he said.
Uki said NCD Governor Powes Parkop was concentrating on markets and vendors were assured conditions would improve soon.
