KKC Henene beat Gerehu Vendors 8-0 in the Gerehu Offseason Rugby League competition at the Sports Centre in Port Moresby over the weekend.
Winger Danny Matiabe opened the scoring with an unconverted try two minutes in.
The rest of the first half was tight with both teams failing to breach each other’s defence.
Vendors’ Daniel Bauko, Moses Apa, Jerry Ben and Jack James made strong carries but their efforts were contained by Henene.
Handling errors from both sides prevented them from completing their sets in the first half.
The second half saw both teams improve their handling as they tried to gain the upper hand.
Vendors’ hopes of a comeback were dashed when Henene combined well to post another unconverted try on the right edge.
Shaun Rova, Isaac Henry, Philimon Waralo and Hamule Samuel put in strong performances to help Henene claim victory.
Henene coach Jeffery Para said his team, made up of players from Koroba, Hela, kept Vendors scoreless with a strong defensive effort.
“I formed the team for my players to change their attitude and be responsible citizens of the country,” Para said.
“The boys reside in different suburbs in the city but they convene on the weekends to play.
“This is the third round of competition. We joined in round two and this is our second straight win. Our aim is to make the finals and win.”
