VENDORS are urged to use the facilities provided at the market in Gerehu, Port Moresby.
Gerehu Market Vendors Association president Petrus Hoba said the market had been renovated to encourage more women and girls to use it.
“The initiative led by the United Nations Women and the National Capital District office and development partners has seen the market renovated and manned by security to promote a safer environment for women and girls in the city,” he said.
Hoba said vendors however continued to sell goods near the bus stop and other places in the suburb.
“This has affected the numbers of customers coming to the main market as many of them buy from vendors operating near the bus stop and roadsides and go back,” he said.
“Maybe if the bus stop is moved closer to where the market is, the vendors will be interested to come to the market which will encourage more customers to come to the market.
“In the market, we provide all the basic services like water and sanitation for mothers to wash their produce to keep the freshness, toilet and benches for them to display their produce.”
A fee of K2 is charged.
