VENUES for the PNG Games in Lae will be ready in time for opening ceremony on November 16, an official says.

Games chief executive officer Materua Tamarua gave the assurance in response to concerns raised by the Lae public that upgrading and maintenance work at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium and other venues was slow and the facilities would not be ready in time. “PNG Sports Foundation is in charge of the stadium area. It is their property and the work is being managed by them and the appointed contractor,” Tamarua said.

“These works are funded by the National Government and the contracts were issued by the Central Supplies and Tenders board.”

“Work on the pool and indoor stadium is progressing well. Both jobs require delivery of items from overseas suppliers.

“These areas will be ready for the Games.”

PNGSF regional manager Vincent Onevagi confirmed that the all-weather red synthetic track covering had been shipped from France and was expected to arrive next week.

Onnevagi said Digara construction would re-lay the track surface at the stadium next month. “The synthetic track shipment is enroute from France and the contractor should complete it by November 12 just before the games,” Onnevagi said.

Tamarua hailed the positive response from the corporate sector in terms of sponsorships in the different categories. “Despite the challenging economic climate this year we’ve secured a number of key partners.”
