Village receives 20 outboard motors

Business

THE Mineral Resource Development Company (MRDC) presented 20 new outboard motors worth over K530,000 to 14 clans from Boera village in Central to enable them to sustain themselves through fishing.
The boats were bought by MRDC through the Gas Resources PNG LNG Plant Ltd, a landowner company representing landowners from the four impact sites with funds from its 30 per cent community infrastructure trust.
MRDC general manager Imbi Tagune, when presenting the boats, said they were tangible benefits that would improve the lives of the people. Gas Resources PNG LNG Ltd chairlady Ulato Ave said prior to the LNG project coming into production, Boera was a fishing village but that had stopped when the project began.
“Pre LNG, Boera was always a traditional fishing village. Post LNG, a lot of things died out.”

  • I think it would be a good initiative if the clans involved form a Fishing Co-operative Society which will buy and sell the fresh fish to hotels, supermarkets etc through contractual arrangements. Any surplus can also be sold at the Koki market. This should guarantee the fishermen a guarantee price, hence income. Formation of a co-operative Society not only creates additional employment and income but also for teaching basic financial and management skills.
