Village running out of water

IT has been rather dry at Galoma Rubu in the Rigo district, Central.
There was rain and showers last year but it was far from adequate.
Some rivers have dried up.
Margaret Aaron, from the village, said it was a daily struggle to find enough water for cooking and washing.
“I use containers to store water on rainy days but it’s all used up within two days. Others, who have tanks, fill them halfway but that lasts for a week or two,” she said.
“The creek water has been soaked up, so I dig a hole 30 centimetres deep then wait for five to 10 minutes for water to fill up then I use a bowl to fetch water and fill up my containers.
“It is a daily routine – every day – because we don’t have pumps. The containers I use carry 15 litres of water only.
“This water issue has been like this since 2016. We did have little rain but it was the throughout 2017.
“We had people from the neighbouring villages coming to the creek and queuing up at 5am till afternoon – just to fetch water too.”
Aaron is hoping that this year will bring more rain to fill up their creeks and rivers.
