A VILLAGE in Wosera-Gawi, East Sepik has ventured into cocoa farming after years of battling the cocoa pod borer, says councillor Willie Jangi.
Agriculture and Livestock Minister John Simon handed over 5,000 polybags to cocoa farmers of Jama village this week.
“These polybags are to be looked after properly. These are of good quality and are worth keeping,” Simon said. He said all cocoa seedlings to be used at the cocoa nursery would come from Kerevat in East New Britain.
He promised to support the villagers with another 5,000 polybags.
The bags would be used for the nursery and later distributed to farmers to use at their plantations.
Simon said the current price for wet cocoa in Maprik was K3 a kg and was likely to increase in the coming months.
“I encourage all farmers to work hard to produce the best quality cocoa.”
