THIS year marks Vision City’s 10 years of operation in the country, according to general manager Anderson Ting.
Ting said Vision City was the first major shopping mall incorporating mixed development retail concept.
“In general, the idea was brilliant as it shaped the country’s image having a solid, massive brick and mortar retail shopping complex,” he told The National.
“It’s the talk of the town.
“Everyone is proud of it, wanted to be acquainted with it and to see Vision City appear somewhat to be a social status until today.
“For the operators behind the scenes, the concept was very new.
“Retailers were sceptical whether this approach would work in PNG despite seeing shopping malls mushrooming throughout the world.”
Ting said Vision City had forged through, growing with pioneer tenants such as CHM, Marks, RH Hypermarket, City Pharmacy Ltd, Fonehaus, Cherish Lady, Beauty World, Trends, Donut King and others.
He said it had been a very tough 10 years, with consumer taste changing, the retail industry evolving “alongside complex human behaviour”.
“Being the first mall in the country doesn’t for once permit us to sit back and relax as we constantly brainstorming to innovate the centre, to improve consumer shopping experience and to stay ahead with virtual competitors,” he said.
“With some plans currently set in motion, plus the country’s current business outlook, I anticipate a major shift and evolution in retail industry surrounding Vision City for the better in the next 10 years.”
Meanwhile, marketing manager Maureen Esta told The National that the mall’s anniversary promotion started in Jan 15 and to end on May 2.

The mall will be giving away more than 300 prizes.
The grand prize is worth K50,000, VC gift cards and a trip for two to Sydney.
Esta said anyone could join the promotion by shopping at the mall with a minimum of K10 using the Vision City Gift Card and exchange their receipts for the raffle tickets at the mall information counter.
“We are giving all these prizes as an appreciation to our shoppers.”
