NCD Governor Powes Parkop yesterday donated K50,000 in cash and the equivalent amount in technical and logistical support to the PNG Volleyball Federation to stage their national championships in Port Moresby this weekend.
Earlier, Digicel PNG announced that it would continue to sponsor the championship.
The event is to be played at six venues: Taurama Leisure Centre (TLC), Kilakila, Vabukori, Tatana Island, Murray Barracks and Gerehu.
The championships have attracted 72 teams from 17 volleyball associations in PNG.
Kiunga and Tabubil will participate for the first time while Madang will make its re-appearance after several years in the doldrums joining fellow Momase neighbours, Huon Gulf, Butibum and Lae.
The Southern region will have good representation with participation from Popondetta and Central including Koiari and Tubusereia while from Port Moresby, the NCD, Fairfax, Vabukori and Tatana competitions will field teams.
Parkop said volleyball was a popular game played widely in the country.
“The NCDC and my administration is keen to support championships because it has potential to unite the people,” he said.
He commended PNG Volleyball Federation  president Turaho Morea and his executive for continuing to develop the code with promising international results.
“We have done it at the Arafura Games in Northern Territory and also recently at Noumea Games by winning the bronze medal.
“There is no reason we can go one better in other international competitions,” he said.
“Unlike previous championships where only one venue was used, now the 2011 volleyball championships will be decentralised and will be played at six strategic locations where visitors will enjoy the facilities built by NCDC.”
“It is a way to say thank you to NCD by taking the game around the city to show our visitors what NCDC has done for its city residents, and doing it at the right time during the national championships, it will compliment the support NCDC has rendered to the PNG volleyball federation.”
Morea thanked Parkop and his NCDC management for supporting the PNGVF
