Volleyball row ends with 4 deaths

Police in East Sepik say four people were killed on Sunday following a row over a volleyball competition at Mengar village, across the bay from Wewak town.
According to information gathered by police, volleyball match was organised by locals from Mengar which attracted teams from nearby communities such as those residing at the bay (Basis) and the public dumping site (dump).
Provincial police commander Supt Albert Beli said it was alleged that young people from the Basis and Dump area attacked the competition organiser from Mengar.
Beli said he was shot with a wire (through a catapult) to his chest.
He was rushed to the main hospital at Boram but did not make it,” he added.
He said police discouraged Mengar people from retaliating.
But, when police left the scene, he said three from Basis and Dump area were killed.
“We warned them (Mengar) not to do anything and when we left, they organised themselves and in the early hours at 3am this (Monday) morning they moved over to Basis and shot dead three youth from the Basis and dump area,” he said.
Beli said four suspects from Mengar were in police custody.
He also said five suspects involved in the death of the sports organiser have been identified and would be arrested.
