THE National Capital District/Central Commander and Assistant Commissioner of Police Anthony Wagambie Jr has thanked the community at Cloudy Bay in Central for persuading four murder suspects to surrender to police.
The four men accused of gunning down a man and wounding another on Jan 23 at Obo Rocks, Aneve, Cloudy Bay, surrendered to police and were charged with wilful murder and attempted murder.
Commander Wagambie said the suspects aged between 18 and 21, all from the Cloudy Bay area, surrendered when police and the community leaders appealed to them to come out of hiding. ACP Wagambie said the arrest of the four suspects with the help of the community showed the community’s remorse over the incident and their desire for peace and good order to be maintained.
Wagambie said the people of Cloudy Bay had shown their respect for the law by willingly cooperating to convince the four suspects to give themselves up to be formally arrested and charged for their crimes. He said the community support had made it easy for police to resolve the murder case.
But the four men would now appear in court to answer for their crimes.
The four allegedly lured a boat ferrying a crab buyer by waving at them to come ashore before shooting the boat occupants with a gun.
The boat operator was killed instantly and his body reportedly fell overboard while another man was severely injured by pellets.
The suspects fled after the shooting.
The body was recovered several days later and buried.
The four suspects surrendered to Central Police and were transported to the 15-Mile police station.
They were later transferred to the main cells at the Boroko police station.
