THE Waghi Tumbe, Jiwaka’s flagship rugby league side has a new sponsor in Giru Limited.
The franchise name is Giru Limited Waghi Tumbe and the side is looking forward to making the finals of the 2018 Digicel Cup season.
For the last three years since 2015, the Jiwaka provincial government had been the major sponsor of the team.
Giru Ltd managing director Fredrick Koldop announced the sponsorship and the ownership of the franchise in Mt Hagen yesterday.
Koldop said that Giru Ltd was a local company specialised in civil works and he had decided back the Jiwaka side.
The company also gave K20,000 for the team to participate at the Under-23 national nines championship this month in Goroka.
Koldop said his company had been supporting sports for several years and taking on board Waghi Tumbe which would be ongoing for sometime. “We are a local company and we’ve decided to get seriously involved in sports sponsorship and we thought the Tumbe are the province’s most followed sports team,” Koldop said.
“With this support I believe the Tumbe will do well this season.”
He said sport was an area that could help produce better citizens and as a company he was willing to do his part for the youth and the province.
Meanwhile, Koldop also announced the sponsorship of Jiwaka Governor’s Cup with K150,000. The tournament kicks off later this month.
Tumbe team manager Joe McConor thanked the company for its support.
McConor said having a committed sponsor for the season had put their minds at ease and allowed them to focus on getting the side ready.
He also thanked the provincial government under Governor Dr William Tongamp for their support over the last three seasons.
