MADANG’s Wagsford defeated Tusbab Kumuls 3-2 in main game of day one of the Momase Club Championships at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium in Lae yesterday.
The men’s Pool-B soccer match was evenly contested despite wet conditions.
Wagsford were first to score through Michael Tole Jr but Tusbab Kumuls responded with Max Sengum equalising from halfway.
Tusbab Kumuls added another goal through Morris Devi to surge ahead 2-1.
A Kumuls infringment saw Wagsford receiving a penalty with Juran Patrick heading in the shot to equalise again. Wagsford continued to apply pressure and eventually netted the winner through Tole.
Match commissioner Alex Toki said the Papua New Guinea Football Association’s four member associations in Mamose — Madang Soccer Association, Lae Football Association, Lahi Soccer Association and Wau Football Association — were competing at championships.
“The championship matches will end on Sunday with the finals,” Toki said.
“It is a qualifier to determine the top men and women’s teams to represent Mamose at the National Club Championships.
“After so many years in the doldrums, the championships have been revived, thanks to PNGFA president John Kapi Natto.”
