The  PNG Power compound community at North Waigani in Port Moresby presented K530 to the Port Moresby Cancer Relief Society yesterday after raising money in a breakfast last Sunday.

Office manager for the Port Moresby Cancer Relief Society Ascenate Asi received the money from community leader Somo Sasenu.

“The society is very pleased with the contribution the community has come up with in its efforts to support the work of the society,” Asi said.

“We are very appreciative that such a community can come out and take the initiative to do something worthwhile.

Sasenu said:  “The main reason for the breakfast was to enable the community to be aware of the fact that cancer in PNG is a very serious matter that needs to be addressed at all levels.

“We have raised the funds as a community to show the other communities out there that we can address serious issues in the country starting at community level right up to national level.

“It’s about everybody contributing something to make a stand against the disease. It can start wherever you are – in the village, ward, town or city,” he said.

Compound community organisers for the event Rachael Aramchal and Elizabeth Veu said: “We came up with the idea after reading similar stories in the media and thought that it would be meaningful to conduct such an event  because at the compound we have also lost loved ones to the dreaded disease.”

Nearly all the people residing in the compound  came together.
