Waipo urges officers to work together

Correctional Services Commissioner Michael Waipo says commanders and officers at prisons are not working together and following up with regional directors for payments.
Responding to a media report last week on Boram prison in East Sepik faced with food shortage, Waipo said monthly payments of the prison had been sorted.
Warders at the Wewak prison had to release 35 inmates for a weekend last month so they could go and look for food.
Waipo said officers at Boram jail did not do their follow-ups or make an attempt to reach the regional director of finance to sort out the payments.
“The people responsible for the follow up did not do their job, but the matter is now in court,” Waipo said.
He said the problem was with the officers and the management as they were not communicating well and this had led to the prison running low on food.
Waipo said they had copies and receipts of the payments and had been passed through to the commanders of the jail.
“By now most of the unpaid portion have been paid, including the balance of April and May,” Waipo said.
He said the Boram prison food shortage problem had been sorted. He urged officials not to operate in isolation but communicate among themselves.
