A 22-YEAR-OLD man wanted in relation to several crimes including robbery and sea piracy in Madang was shot and wounded by police on April 12 after resisting arrest.
Madang police commander acting Supt Mazuc Rubiang said the suspect is alleged to have been armed with a pistol and was at Miliok Street in New Town when police were alerted and arrived at a house where they attempted to arrest him.
Rubiang said the suspect resisted and tried to escape when he was shot and wounded.
He said the suspect was then transported to the hospital and treated.
Rubiang said the suspect was alleged to have been involved in robberies, sea piracy, bag snatching, threatening people with a gun and stealing from them and other offences.
“He was one of the main suspects who was involved in stealing the brand new Institute of Medical Research Toyota Landcruiser last Sept 19 where the vehicle was stolen and then all the parts were stripped off leaving only the body of the vehicle when police arrived at the scene,” he said.
Rubiang said the suspect escaped from the police cell at Jomba after initially surrendering to police.
He added that the man was also suspected of being involved in robbing passengers on a dinghy headed to the Rai Coast on Nov 14.
