A SUSPECT wanted for several criminal activities in Madang surrendered to police yesterday.
Madang police commander acting Supt Robert Baim said the suspect, who lived on Panitibun Island in ward one of Northern Ambenob local level government, turned himself in to police with help from Bel community leaders.
“The suspect is facing charges of sea piracy and boat theft within Madang and neighbouring maritime provinces,” Baim said.
“Particularly, as the skipper in the recent theft of five 40 horse power motor engines and a 23-foot dinghy at Siassi Island.”
Baim said the suspect was taken to Jomba Transitional Custodial Unit – National Criminal Intelligence Unit office where he was profiled, arrested, and charged with five counts of engine theft.
“He awaits court appearance,” Baim said.
His surrender, at the Madang police commander’s office, was witnessed by officials including the police station commander, rural commander, officer in charge of Criminal Investigation Division, senior officer of the provincial police command, Bel leaders, his family and the media.
Baim stressed the Madang police’s ongoing efforts against sea piracy and issued a caution against potential offenders.
“Madang police are working on curbing sea piracy and a warning goes to potential offenders, if we catch you, you might not see tomorrow,” he said.
“You either surrender or we hunt you down. No time to waste.”
