THE Ward 12 Offseason Rugby League competition in Port Moresby is set for another weekend of preseason competitions registering 32 teams for the 2024 season to be played at the McGregor Barracks Oval.
Ward 12 RL president Amos Koime said the National Capital District commission-sanctioned competition set to run for a four-month period is targeted at youths in the 8-Mile to 14-Mile areas in Moresby North East.
“We started competitions last week and registered over 32 teams mainly comprised of Under-20 and senior men’s division. We are looking at registering eight teams for women’s club interested to compete,” he said.
“This offseason competition is to keep the youths busy until the Port Moresby Rugby League (PRL) returns for the 2024 season as most of the youths within our area compete in that competition.”
Koime said the competition’s theme was ‘Change and Develop’ Koime said also served as an opportunity to develop more rugby talents from the communities.
“Originally the competition was hosted up at the Bomana Police College however due to the field being used by the college, we relocated the competition to McGregor Barracks.
“We’re grateful to receive support from the police personnel/college to be given a venue to host our competition.”
Meanwhile, the competition also serves as a buildup for the ward with their aim to field a team, Zulu Riders, in the PRL competition for the 2024 season.
