WARD councils will be given K10,000 each to fund village-based projects, says Minister for Inter-Government Relations Pila Niningi.
Niningi told Parliament yesterday that the Government wanted to see ward councils were properly funded so they could carry out village-based projects for the people effectively.
“As time goes and based on the cashflow, we may increase the funding but currently we will be allocating K10,000 to ward councils,” he said.
Niningi made this comments after Kairuku-Hiri MP Peter Isoaimo asked how much funding has been allocated to council wards and when the money would be released.
Isoaimo also questioned if the Department of Inter-Government Relations had already started working on a timeframe and plan on the proposed amendments to ensure that council ward elections were carried out in conjunction with general elections.
However, Niningi said that it was only February and he would give a report at a later date.

  • This is a brilliant idea ,Hon Peter Isaimo. The bulk of the country’s population are in very remote areas and with this money going straight to the village level will see some tangible development. The MPs are not delivering service to the village level. This is the way moving forward Hon Peter Isoaimo. Increase the funding up to K1000,000.00 and we will see true changes taking place in very remote areas like Telefomin
