THE Wari Vele Cup tournament has been deferred to Dec 16-20 to allow for better preparations of the event, according to the Kairuku Amateur Boxing Association executives.
The event was initially set for next Sunday.
The tournament director Ricky Berua said they needed more time to prepare the ground work to ensure the tournament was successful.
With interest shown, he said it was expected to be big event, and, therefore they had to make sure the living quarters, boxing ring and other logistics at Veifa’a were in order before the start of the tournament.
However, he was optimistic that all preparations should be completed by next week.
This year’s annual event, which is sponsored by Wari Vele, has attracted more than 250 boxers from 21 clubs in the Southern region.
“With the tournament deferred, supporters from the Kairuku and Mekeo villages will have to be patient to ensure the tournament is well run leading to Christmas,” he said.
Berua said boxing had a big following in the Kairuku-Hiri district and the tournament was expected to attract fighters and supporters around the area.
He also apologised to the fighters and supporters for the delay.
However, the deferral should give them more time to prepare for the tournament.
