POLICE vehicles in the Northern command will not have tinted glasses, says assistant police commissioner Peter Guinness.
Guinness said tinted police vehicles aroused suspicion and mistrust from the public and did not give an impression of transparency and accountability.
“Remove this tint on this new vehicle, you will never know what is going on inside, if policemen are drinking beer or womanising inside, you will never know,” Guinness said at the presentation of a Toyoya Land Cruiser 10-seater to the Kainantu police station by Obura-Wonenara MP John Boito on Friday.
“I want all police vehicles to have clear glasses so everyone knows who is in it and what is happening in it.”
The vehicle was donated by Boito for Kainantu police to extend policing services to his electorate which is in their area of responsibilities.
He called on people in Kainantu and Obura-Wonenara districts in Eastern Highlands to report police personnel misusing the vehicle.
He said having adequate logistical support to carry out their duties in the districts was challenging for the Police Department and any help was greatly appreciated and as such it was crucial police stations given such assistance needed to use the vehicles and equipment for their intended purpose.
He thanked Boito for the donation and added that outside of Kainantu and Obura-Wonenara other districts such as Henganofi would also benefit from the police services.
The presentation was part of a ceremony in Kainantu town to launch its five-year district development plan.
Kainantu MP William Hagahauno thanked Boito for the new vehicle.
Boito, who is also the finance vice-minister, donated K200,000 to Kainantu Hospital to reconstruct its morgue.
“This police vehicle comes from Obura-Wonenara district, use it wisely to serve Kainantu and the people of Eastern Highlands,” Boito added.
Guest of honour at the launch was Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso, who said it was good to see districts help each other to address common issues and concerns.
