A GROUP of youths in Manus robbed a vessel owned by Papindo Trading Company last weekend, police say.
Manus police commander Chief Inspector David Yapu said yesterday the youths travelled in a dinghy to the vessel mv Manus anchored near Rara Island and stole cargo worth more than K4000.
They boarded the vessel and assaulted the ship captain and his wife before stealing the goods.
Yapu said the suspects involved in the incident were known to police and one of them has been arrested and detained at Lorengau police station and the others were expected to be arrested soon.
He warned youths that stealing from vessels was an act of sea piracy and under the Criminal Code Act they could face a severe penalty if found guilty by the National Court.
In another report, a 27-year-old man from Pateku Island in the Nigoherm LLG died when he was speared with a sharp metal object last Thursday.
Yapu said the deceased was identified as Kosko Lukas.
The suspect is known suspect to police.
He said the sharp object penetrated through the victim’s shoulder and through his lungs causing his death.
Yapu said due to the isolation of the island and bad weather the body could not be transported to the Manus Provincial Hospital morgue for a post mortem and was buried in the village.
He has instructed his criminal investigation department officers to arrange with a doctor to travel to the island and have the body exhumed to conduct a post mortem to establish the cause of his death.
However, their travel to the island will depend on the weather situation.
