THE protracted Madang Rugby Football League pre-season nines finally came to a close last Sunday with LBC Warriors taking out the title in a repeat of their 2010 exploits.

The Warriors defeated Royals 1-0 via a field goal from skipper Jeff Tumbu in the dying moments of golden point extra time.

Tumbu’s field goal brought a sigh of relief to many followers of the game as it ended a pre-season competition that had dragged on for an unprecedented 11 weeks due to management issues.

The Warriors picked up the first prize of a cheque for K500 and Royals settled for K300 with MRFL president Paul Poka announcing that the trophies would be delivered once they are available.

The Digicel man-of-the-match went to Warriors hardworking half-back Nathan Anda for his efforts in organising his team in a try-less affair.

The Warriors regular club match prize went to Tumbu for his leadership throughout the tournament where his team was unbeaten. In the B Grade, Bomai Pythons prevailed over Royals.

Meanwhile, Poka announced that the regular 13s competition will kick off in two weeks to allow clubs to organise themselves and for the Madang Rugby Union to host the Sigma Invitational Rugby Sevens at the Ron Albert Oval this weekend.
