WATER PNG will build a new K419 million water supply plant to address the increasing water demand and security in Port Moresby.
The proposed 50Mld (millions of liters per day) Bunu water supply project is situated 23km north-west of Port Moresby in Central.
According to a Water PNG statement, the project is sufficient to meet the city demands until 2034.
Last week, the State Enterprises Minister William Duma, Treasurer Ian Ling Stuckey and Water PNG officials visited the site.
Water PNG identified Bunu as an alternate water source to the current Sirinumu Dam up in the Sogeri plateau. The Sirinumu dam is owned by PNG Dams, a subsidiary of Kumul Consolidated Holdings Ltd (KCHL).
The raw water supplies in cascading order to PNG Power’s Rouna Hydroelectric scheme before feeding into Water PNG’s raw water mains for treatment and supply to the city.
The development of Bunu is strategic. Firstly, the city residents will no longer experience water woes and issues such as water rationing and partial shutdowns as a result of PNG Power’s maintenance programmes and related issues.
Secondly, the site is where the Laloki and Brown rivers converge where water is in abundance even if there is a drought. Following clearance from KCH earlier, Water PNG is mobilising resources before moving on to implementation phase.
Contractor China Jiangsu International will mobilise personnel, a project survey, geotechnical investigations, preliminary detailed design and procure project materials.
