MORE than 20,000 people living at 8-Mile settlement in the National Capital District are proposing their own water acquirement project.

The board and management of Eda Ranu have thanked the water project committee for coming up with the idea which will benefit the company and settlers.

The project involves the installation of stand pipes, the stopping of illegal connections and vandalism.

Moresby North-East MP Labi Amaiu said the project would generate money for Eda Ranu. Amaiu has been working with Eda Ranu to provide water to everyone in the electorate.

Eda Ranu chief operating officer Dr Fifaia Matainaho said it was the first time for the utility company to receive such a professional proposal.

“This is an excellent idea because for Eda Ranu to monitor water users in such a settlement with a lot of people is very challenging and difficult,” Matainaho said.

“Eda Ranu will fully support this project.” Amaiu said the joint district planning committee would provide K1 million funding and National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop K500,000.

“Five water committees have been appointed and will manage water in the seven different associations comprising people from all over the country,” he said.

The 8-Mile settlement is known for its swamp land where people first settled in the 1980s.
