MADANG town and the outside centres that source water from Water PNG are without water for almost a week, a senior officer says.
Madang police commander Supt Mazuc Rubiang said two batteries that were used to operate a secondary power supply system for the water pump station was stolen.
Supt Rubiang said police were briefed on the incident that took place last week by Water PNG staff .
He said police officers went to Paim village in South Ambenob local level government to investigate the matter.
Supt Rubiang said the home of the main suspect at Egemul village was searched and two battery terminals were found.
He said police found a homemade firearm in the house but the suspect and his wife escaped.
Police were still looking for the suspects involved.
“I am calling on those that stole the batteries to return the batteries to the Water PNG officers,” Supt Rubiang said.
“Return it so water supply can be restored in the town.
“These culprits have forced public service such as the hospitals, schools and other business houses to close.”
He said on Tuesday, Madang Health Authority chief executive officer Fidelis Waipma issued a memo announcing the scaling down of services due to water supply issues.
