THE Wau-Bulolo road will now be known as the Bulolo National Highway.
The name change was commissioned and launched last Friday.
A billboard announcing the new name was also erected at the junction of the Bulolo and Markham Road highway at 10-Mile.
Bulolo MP Sam Basil, whose district development programme was responsible for commissioning the name change, said Bulolo was an important district in terms of economic developments such as alluvial and large-scale gold mining with spin-offs, and its highway should be highlighted.
Basil said Bulolo district had its place in history, within PNG and the world, and the signboard would play a significant role to users of both highways when they pass by.
“The information displayed thereupon will be useful to the highway users when they want to know where they are heading and how long it will get them to their destination,” Basil said.
“The billboard will add some Bulolo spirit to motorists and passengers travelling along the Highlands Highway in or out of Lae to the Nadzab, Highlands, Ramu and Madang,” he said.
He urged the residents living nearby and the public to take care of the signboard.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Tony Wagambie said during the launch that signboards saved lives and also provided much-needed information to travellers, therefore, must be taken care of.
He said national roads were for the public to use and all road safety precautions went with it and should be followed.
