POLICE have confiscated a police-issued gun and live ammunitions from a convicted former policeman’s house in Kiunga.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) border command Peter Philip told The National that the policeman had been arrested and convicted some years back for the murder of his wife and was serving his sentence at Bomana, but kept firearms and the ammunitions in his house.
He said taskforce police officers in Kiunga were informed about the firearms and ammunitions.
The officers went to his house last week, searched and retrieved the firearms.
ACP Philip said when he was the police commander for Western, the policeman was the armourer for Kiunga police.
“He was disarmed when he killed his wife at the PNG Defence Force forward operating base in Kiunga,” he said.
“The policeman was arrested and charged and was convicted for murder and is now in Bomana, but the firearms were in his house.
“I am pleased with the police officers in Kiunga for recovering the ammunitions and the gun.”
ACP Philip said with the election coming up next year, such weapons could be used to attack police officers and others so he was pleased with what was done.
He urged people to work the with police and report such matters.
