Weather office issues gale warning

THE National Weather Service (NWS) has issued gale warnings for all coastal areas in PNG and advised people to refrain from going out to sea. 

NWS official Jimmy Gomoga said yesterday winds were currently between 33 to 48 knots and creating waves up to four meters high. 

“The National Weather Service strongly advises people not to go out to sea during this time, as we have issued a gale warning,” Gomoga said.

“It extremely dangerous conditions for small crafts and passenger ships, people shouldn’t risk it.

“Winds are expected to subside after the weekend, sometime next week.” 

Yesterday morning wind speeds in Port Moresby read up to 42.73 km/hr.

Vanimo recorded the country’s strongest wind readings this week with speeds reaching up to 49.9km/hr. 

Gomoga said the country was currently in the peak of its wet season and widespread heavy rain and thunderstorms could be expected across the country in the next week. 

“I also would like to remind those in cyclone-prone areas around the Coral and Solomon Seas to be alert during this time,” he said.

“We are currently monitoring possible tropical cyclones formations and we advise those in at risk areas to keep an ear out for any public notices we might issue in the coming weeks.”
