BEATING Moni Plus in their own game was no easy task, but Wel Builders crew shrugged off daunting tasks of defending against a powerhouse team at the FILBA 10th season at Don Bosco Gymnasium  in Gabutu, Port Moresby.
Wel Builders beat Moni Plus 78-77 in a nail-biting game on Sunday.
Wel Builders team manager Wilbert Mendoza commended his players for a job well done.
“While Lito Bayaton sank the winning basket, it was Robert Kave’s superb defence that brought us through during crunch time,” Mendoza said.
Based on the computer statistics, the former FEU Tamaraws forward Kave scored 10 points, pulled down seven rebounds, issued three assists and blocked the opposition shots five times in just 22 minutes of playing time.
With less than 20 seconds in the game, Wel Builders were ahead by three points, 77-74, when young Tony Haro hit a triple that tied the game at 77-77 as time was running out.
At the transition, Builders decided to go to their most reliable man on the floor, three-time MVP Lito Bayaton who drove to the basket and picked up a foul, with 1:26 second left.
He split his charity throws to give Wel Builders a second spot behind Triple 8 in the ladder.
In the other encounter, Eltech survived a third quarter rally from Primus and turned them back on the fourth quarter to win by 20 points, 95-75.
Meanwhile, Triple 8 thrashed Propest Control 98-79.
Veterans Mac Laurel, Alfred Dimacale, Enrico Magalona and Joe Elavo were too much to handle.
