WEST Eagles received training gear this week from Niumi Distributors Limited in a boost for the fourth-placed Port Moresby Australian Football League (POMAFL) women’s side.
Head coach John Timothy said the support, under the Relaxo brand, would boost their morale booster and help achieve their goal of reaching the finals at the Colts Oval.
“We are grateful for this support and will ensure that we promote the Relaxo brand on and off the field without causing any disrepute,” he said.
Niumi Distributors managing director Joe Lai said the footwear brand had been around for some time and was known throughout Papua New Guinea.
Its signature footwear are Relaxo slippers, Sparx shoes, Flite sandals and Bahamas beach slippers.
“It is only fitting that our footwear brand continues to support sports and education in PNG as part of our community initiative,” Lai said. “We are happy to be supporting and boosting the morale of this team of young Papua New Guinean women in this sport.”
The West Eagles club was established in 1979 and is one of the surviving clubs in the league.
At the time of establishment, West Eagles had a men’s team each the A-reserves and premier divisions.
The women’s division was introduced in 2010 as part of an effort to promote equal participation and inclusivity.
The Papua New Guinea AFL Commission continues to encourage women’s participation in the sport across the country. This season, POMAFL has six women’s teams competing for the premiership. West Eagles fielded a women’s team last year, but the season was not completed due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
