Western Highlands children talked about their rights and responsibilities and how they can make the world a better place, according to United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef).
Students from Mun Primary School and three elementary schools celebrated World Children’s
Day last week with the support of Unicef.
The children were in charge of the day’s programme while their teachers helped where they could.
Activities included dramas, songs and key messages on child rights and responsibilities.
World Children’s Day is celebrated on November 20 annually and it is a global day of action for children, by children.
The theme of the day at Mun Primary was “Helping to build a world where every child is in school, safe from harm and can fulfil their potential”. The students raised a lot of awareness through songs and drama about child rights and responsibilities in front of a packed audience of parents and people from nearby communities.
The three important messages for the community included:

  • Raise awareness of the rights and needs of children around the world;
  • increase the number of individuals, corporate and government taking action in support of children, especially for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged; and,
  • Elevate the voices of children and young people as active participants in decision-making.
