Wewak fire station opens new duty barracks

WEWAK fire station in East Sepik now has a new duty barracks to accommodate duty personnel working on shifts at the station.
Speaking at the opening of the barracks, Wewak MP Kevin Isifu thanked the Papua New Guinea Fire Service for implementing such projects in outside centres.
“Fire destroys properties worth millions of kina causing businesses to lose money from the damages caused by fire,” he said.
Isifu assured that as Minister for Inter-Government Relations, which the Fire Service come under, would continue to work with the management to see that other fire stations around the country undergo refurbishments.
East Sepik administrator Dr Clement Malau noted that the Fire Service plays an essential role in the district.
Malau said the provincial government and district administration must be focused in supporting such vital services in the province.
Chief Fire Officer Bill Roo urged the fire fighting personnel to take ownership and be responsible in looking after their new accommodation.
Roo also stressed the importance of provincial governments partnering with the Fire Service to maintain stations.
A ground breaking ceremony was also held for the constructions of a new house for the station commander and duplex accommodation for two senior officers.
