What is Governor Yoto up to?

Letters

THIS is a message to Western Governor Toboi Yoto.
There are a number of issues with your story.
Firstly, let me say the sovereignty we enjoy today came about from the many Australians and Papua New Guineans who died during WWII protecting us from the Japanese imperialist forces who wanted to take away any chance of sovereignty.
Secondly, sovereignty is not a right.
It is in fact a privilege which others fought and died to give us in PNG to enjoy, the very sovereignty you enjoy with a freedom of speech and movement, the very sovereignty you enjoy to live amongst people who are not of your ethnic group, you will never enjoy such sovereignty under a communist regime.
We in Papua New Guinea, have had 47 years to develop our provinces and country but clearly we have failed.
Today, we run a gun-at-the-head diplomacy programme, which is a disgrace.
It is not Australia’s job to develop our country.
It is not China’s job, it is ours.
It is not Australia’s fault we failed, it is ours.
You talk about respecting memorandum of understanding that’s why you should respect the Torres Straight Treaty which was signed by our forefathers.
If you think you have all the answers and are up to speed with regional security then why don’t you have the courage to sit with the media including the ABC and explain your position without making cheap insults and declining to comment and running away to hide?
What are you hiding?
There are not enough fish stocks in the Torres Strait and Gulf of Papua to sustain the local population, let alone a giant fake fishery factory, this is nothing about fish.

Balimo Wabea,
