WESTERN Highlands police are out to ensure the festive season is peaceful despite being under-manned for an influx of people travelling into the highlands’ hub, Mt Hagen
They have begun their Christmas and New
Year operations.
Provincial police commander Supt Kaiglo Ambane said although police numbers in the province was down – at least 160 officers who have been deployed elsewhere – normal operations would continue.
He said the province was currently peaceful, and police wanted to ensure that this was maintained throughout the festive season.
Ambane said petty crimes committed on the streets by desperate youths were increasing and police were doing their part to solve this.
He said they were working in partnership with the Hagen Kona Kai project, but since the project withdrew their vehicle for unknown reasons, they were stationary.
