A FATHER who admitted in court that he killed his wife has been sentenced to 13 years in prison.
Chris Allan Simani, 27, from Bereina, in Central, was sentenced at the Waigani National Court.
Justice Panuel Mogish ruled that Simani should serve nine years, three months, three weeks and five days after time spent in custody was deducted from the sentence.
Mogish told Simani that the offence carried a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
The case had fallen into the second category of manslaughter.
“Killing of another human being is wrong and your four children will continue to suffer the loss of their mother,” he said.
“I have come to the conclusion that life imprisonment is not appropriate for your case but you will still have to serve time in prison.”
“This is because human beings cannot be replaced when a life is lost.”
The court was told that Simani had an argument with his wife after she was absent from home for two days.
The wife removed a knife from her bilum and tried to stab him.
Simani tried to remove the knife from her hand but in the process stabbed her in the back.
The incident happened on April 3, 2008, at NBC Hill in Port Moresby.
Simani said he was sorry for what he did. But Mogish said saying sorry would not bring his wife back.
