A COMMITTAL Court magistrate in Lae has committed a woman to stand trial in the National Court on April29 after finding sufficient evidence against her murder charge.
Magistrate Pious Tapil found enough evidence to commit 36-year-old Mazorie Ombora, from Popondetta’s Kusada village in Northern, to face a trial.
“Witnesses statements before the court confirms the charge while the medical report also stated that the deceased (her husband) died following the wounds he received allegedly from you,” Tapil told Ombora.
Ombora in her submission, stated that she was only acting in self-defence when she actually stabbed her husband during their fight.
She also told the court that she had been subjected to violence over a period of time from her husband and had suffered a lot.
Tapil told Ombora that self-defence was a valid claim in court but that could not be decided at the committal court level but the National Court would look into it.
Police report alleged that Ombora on Oct 18, 2023, at their rental residence at Kamkumung had an argument with her husband after he was dropped off from work.
The argument resulted in fighting between Ombora and the husband.
Ombora, during the fight, got up a kitchen knife and stabbed her husband on the left side of the stomach under his arm.
Police told the court that neighbours, who were tenants at the same property, saw what had happened and helped transport Ombora’s husband to Angau Memorial Hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Ombora was later arrested and charged with one count of murder.
She will appear for mention in the National Court on April 29.
