Wigmen register first win

HELA Wigmen bounced back from their loss in the opening round last week to beat Kimbge Cutters 30-22 in the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup round 2 match yesterday.
Wigmen hooker Woods Kawage starred for the Kroton-sponsored side with a 16-point haul which included two tries and 4/4 conversions. Kawage was awarded man-of-the-match.
The game was in the balance in the first-half with both sides having scored a try each. Center, Mcwin Worinu scored first for Wigmen and Cutters second-rower Motex Guri for his side to level the score.
Wigmen shifted to another gear in the second-half with their pack led by Manu Kame and Jacob Lot who laid the platform for their backs. Worinu scored two more tries in the second half to complete his hattrick while Kawage scored his second try to give Wigmen a big lead.
Cutters looked like they were in the contest when hooker Jethro John scored a double but it was too late to stage a comeback. Winger, Edward Yukil scored a consolation try for the Cutters with few mnuites before full-time.
In other matches played on Saturday, the Rabaul Gurias and Central Dabaris drew 12-12 at the National Football Stadium while in Jiwaka, the Mt Hagne Eagles and defending premiers Enga Mioks also drew 16-16.
The Mioks are still winless in 2024 following their loss against the Gurias in round 1 as well. The double header at the Lae Rugby League Ground yesterday saw Mendi Muruks beat Goroka Lahanis 28-20 as Lae Tigers beat Gulf Isou 21-14.
Meanwhile, the Port Moresby Vipers beat Waghi Tumbe 20-12 in the final match of the NFS double header yesterday. The Vipers are now leading the 12-team competition ladder after two rounds.
