THE Hela Wigmen secured fifth spot in the Digicel Cup ladder after beating Port Moresby Vipers 28-20 in a round 16 fixture at the National Football stadium on Sunday.
Both teams with 15 points each gave little away despite the 48 points scored in the game.
Vipers were in fifth spot after the previous weeks games with points difference moving Wigmen to sixth and Bintagor Lahanis to seventh. With Wigmen winning and so as Lahanis who upset Gulf Isou 16-15 win, the Wigmen are ahead jumped to fifth. Lahanis are sixth.
The Digicel Cup has the last two rounds remaining and Wigmen have the upper hand with two home games.
Wigmen coach Roderick Puname said the win was the result of all their hard work during the season although the win over the Vipers was equally difficult.
“It was a good effort by everybody. Both teams played well but I was not happy with some of the calls made by the match referee and his actions and decision were inconsistent,” Puname said.
“Luckily, we won the match and like people say, a win is a win and I am proud of the boys for putting in the effort.” They meet the Goroka Lahanis on Sunday and Waghi Tumbe the next. Puname’s team looked sharp in the first first, scoring three tries to lead 14-8 at halftime. In the second half, Vipers scored through Frank Tole and interchange halfback Benton Leme.
For Wigmen Stanley Olo kicked a penalty to have them leading 16-14.
The Vipers bounced back again with a try through Supa George and Leme got the two extras to lead 20-16 but Wigmen came out firing in the last 10 minutes to close out the victory 28-20.
